INTRODUCING: PARASAIL

The Swine Industry’s FIRST Avirulent-Live, Single Dose Haemophilus parasuis Vaccine.

ParaSail aids in the prevention of Glasser's Disease in swine caused by Haemophilus parasuis. There are at least fifteen known types circulating in swine today.

Clinical signs can include:

  • Depression
  • Fever
  • Lack of appetite
  • Lameness/reluctance to rise
  • Cough
  • Sudden death

The disease can lead to:

  • Meningitis
  • Middle ear infections
  • Pneumonia
  • Heart sac infection
  • Peritonitis
  • Pleurisy

Haemophilus parasuis may be isolated from the nasal cavity, tonsil, and trachea of healthy, carrier pigs. Under favorable conditions (naïve pigs, stress, viral co-infections) this pathogen can cause systemic infection and death within 24 to 72 hours. Severe outbreaks with 60% mortality have been reported in naïve populations. In conventional herds, mortality caused by H. parasuis occurs mainly in the nursery, between 7 and 8 weeks of age.1

There are at least 15 different serotypes of H. parasuis, and many field isolates are non-typeable. H. parasuis has one of the highest genetic variabilities among swine bacterial pathogens.2

In a recent survey of State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, the percent of incidence of finding H. parasuis among all cases submitted ranged up to as high as 30-40% at one laboratory.3 All labs reported that H. parasuis cases were complicated by co-infections of PCVAD and PRRS.

The most recent report from the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) revealed that the incidence of H. parasuis is on the rise (2000 to 2006):

  • 230% increase in nursery pig incidence – increasing from 7.3% to 17.4%
  • 340% increase in grower/finisher pig incidence – increasing from
    5.4% to 18.7%4
